At first Cape Town was settled by the Dutch East India Company (VOIC) as a refreshment stop en route to India. The fertile land provided a perfect settlement for more Dutch who trekked to Cape Town later. Soon they began developing the region to form a little Dutch colony. The British saw Cape Town as a prime location and annexed it from the Dutch. The Dutch trekked further north where they found many rich minerals. The British followed and took control of many of the Dutch republics making them British colonies. Soon the discovery of gold in the Transvaal province caused a massive rush for power by both the Dutch and the British. Thus reasons for colonisation can be stated as SA being in a prime location, having an abundance of gold and diamonds and for slave trade.

The Dutch East India Company wanted to trade with the East... the problem was that the Dutch had to travel by ship all the way around Africa to get from Europe to Asia, which took months. The Dutch set up a "refreshment station" at the bottom of Africa (the halfway mark of the trade route) to provide the passing ships with fresh food so that the sailors didn't get scurvy etc.

Some French Huguenots later joined them along with some Germans.

Later the British realized the Dutch were pretty smart and annexed the Cape.

When the original settlers got sick of the British rule the "Voortrekkers" moved inland and spread across South Africa.
