Almost all salad dressings are based on a vinegrette -- an emulsion of an oil and and acid (typically but not always vinegar). Other ingredients make up most of the different diressings. For instance:
The basic vinegrette formula is to start with your acid (vinegar, citruses like lemon, etc.) and non-oily ingredients (salt, pepper, herbs, etc.) in a bowl, and gradually whisk in the oil quite slowly until an emulsion (the suspension of one liqiud in small globules within another; in this case oil suspended within water based acids). If you do this correctly, the two liquids appear to combine.
From basic vingrette comes:
Mayonaise (egg yolks added to thicken the emulsion -- they're part of the fat side of the water acid/fat equation).
Thousand Island Dressing -- to mayonaise add sweet gherkins and ketchup, or something similar.
Ranch Dressing -- to mayonaise, add sour cream, herbs, shallots/scallions, etc.
And so on...
In summary, nearly if not all salad dressings are based on a fat/water acid emulsion and grow from there.
Salad is customarily a combination of vegetables or fruits.
A salad can include any type of food, meats, fish, cheese, nuts, etc. with many types of sauces and dressings. Some salads are served cold and others are served warm. There are endless combinations of foods that can be called a 'salad'.
Salad is traditionally made of lettuce leaves, sometimes other vegetables like tomatoes are added, too. Some people prefer to add condiments such as salad dressing and mayonnaise to their salad, but this adds more oil and fat to the food.
Whatever you want to put in it! Most salads start with lettuce of some kind, then add other things according to the maker's whims: chopped egg, various vegetables, salad dressing, croutons, etc.
There are many different ingredients available to make salads. Lettuce is the classic base for the dish, but even this is available in many different varieties. One can then add tomato, cucumber, bell peppers or even cold cooked pasta.
salads are made from lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, feta cheese, cucumber and you could put pasta or chicken in it. you don't have to use all of these.
