I use bonita strips or whole depending on size of shark I am after also a fresh caught bluefish is very bloody and oily and they make good bait also.If fishing off a boat fresh makeral or barracuda chunks work very well!AnswerMostly what I've been doing is taking a cast net near a jetti and catching the small pompano fish and small king fish as they get caught in the waves. Then hook them up and try and get them to bleed a little. There is spot on their undersides between their gills, if you take a knife and just open that up a little they should bleed (they don't have to be dead, in fact it's almost better if they're a live, they give off a signal that shows they're wounded). Then just wade out a little and cast just off of any structure you're around. Sit back and wait and they should come.

Sharks are not only very endangered, but most species are dangerously high in mercury content and are thereby dangerous for human consumption. Perhaps look to something else to catch. (reefannie)

if you are referring to surf or pier fishing I would recommend using live shrimp if you have a bubble box and a bucket. otherwise I would use shrimp or squid which you can buy at most saltwater bait and tackle stores.

Crawdads. Why? It's a natural food source for the Bass and they seem to hit better on Crawdads compared to worms or minnows.

What is the best bait for salt water pier fishing?

live shrimp if you have a bubble box and a plastic bucket. you can buy a bubble box at most bait & tackle stores near the beach. They will show you how to use them at the store. They are about $10 and require two D batteries to work. If you do not have access to live bait I would suggest using dead shrimp or squid. Live bait works best but dead bait is better than no bait.
