Of all the Union generals that made their reputation on winning battles using defensive tactics, Major General George G. Meade stands out as the general who made the most of using defense to his benefit. Meade won the Battle of Gettysburg by forcing General Lee to either attack or retreat back to Virginia. Meade's troops absorbed the Rebel's assaults and turned back Lee's last major attempt to gain a victory on July 3, 1863. Meade wisely used caution in pursuing Lee's retreating army. It was enough in his mind that the major raid conducted by Lee's Army of Northern Virginia into Pennsylvania was defeated. During the 1864 Overland campaign in Virginia, Meade's defensive posture prevented defeats at the battles of Bristoe Station and Mine Hill.

What can be considered as two major deviations in US Civil War battles where tactical defense was ignored?

Many historians point to General Lee's blunder in attacking the Union center on the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg as one example where tactical defensive thinking was swept aside with the hopes of gaining a victory. The other major such battle was when General Grant made serious errors with his frontal assaults on Confederate entrenchments at the Battle of Cold Harbor in 1864.For the most part, the majority of generals on both sides of the conflict adhered to the Clausewitz doctrine of winning a battle by using a tactical defense to mount a counter attack against an enemy.

What were two significant tactical features of the US Civil War Overland campaign?

The Overland campaign initiated by Union General US Grant was a revealing one in terms of the losses Grant was willing to have in his battles in Virginia against the Army of Northern Virginia. Two tactical measures are significant. One was the tactic by Grant to keep his forces close to those of Lee's. This allowed for, in theory, to keep tabs on Lee's forces. ( it failed ) the second feature was a tactic used by both sides. That tactic was the extensive use of fortifications as a defensive method reduce losses. That failed on Grant's side but succeeded on Lee's side.
