You never "have to" have the test for Downs Syndrome. Some women prefer to have the test or have it after an early ultrasound reveals some of the physical signs that a baby maybe born with Downs Syndrome. Others even at a high risk choose not to have the test.
The biggest down fall to any of the genetic prenatal tests for DS is the test can't tell how affected the baby will be, the severity of DS will range from severely disabled to being undetectable except by genetic testing.
Geneticists have set the number separating low-risk from high-risk at 1 / 250.
Because the risk of having a baby with Down syndrome rose above the 1 in 250 it had become the standard of care to offer the screen for Down syndrome to all mothers 35 years and older.
The way the tests are set up, the serum quadruple screen test has a 5 to 8% false-positive rate and also has a false-negative rate of 35 to 40%,
Women 30 are at a risk of 1/900
Women 35 are at a risk of 1/350
Women 40 are at a risk of 1/100
Women 45 are at a risk of 1/45
