35 mm is a size of old chemical film for cameras (i.e. before digital). There are two types of film, negative, which is then used to make paper prints, and positive or slide film which you shine a light through to cast a picture on a screen. Slides are individual frames of the film, usually inserted into a plastic frame for ease of handling. They are slid into and out of the projector, hence the name.
