See related links Extremely talented and outlandishly curious, Leonardo da vinci lived from 1452 to 1519 and was far ahead of his time. Fascinated with the idea that man could fly, he drew sketches of a helicopter and light hang glider, but his accomplishments went far beyond that. Many of his ideas and discoveries were beyond his time and left unconstructed. He visualized a tank, concentrated solar power, calculator, and double hull design for ships. He also drafted an early theory of plate tectonics. Some of his smaller inventions, such as a machine for testing the tensile strength of wire and an automated bobbin winder were manufactured without much fanfare. His inventions also include Musical Instruments, hydraulic pump, movable barricades to defend a city, and steam cannon. Leonardo also has to his credit a bridge design. A smaller version of his design, Vebjorn Sand Bridge, was recently built. As a scientist, he greatly advanced knowledge in such fields as anatomy, civil engineering, optics, and hydrodynamics. In fact, advances he made to lens grinding equipment was crucial for astronomy. Leonardo loved to conceive and draw sketches of his ideas. His sketches provided the concepts more than the specifics of new ideas. Others in time would add to these ideas to make them a reality. Helicopters for one, would take another approximately 450 years (1480's to 1938) to become a new invention. (see link on helicopter that shows his original sketch). Much, much more information about him can be found on the internet.
He invented a "cross-bow launcher", a armored tank (or "turtle tank"), a water lift, landing gear for a helicopter, a machine gun, a thread cutter, and a catapult.
**NOTE** Leonardo da Vinci did NOT invent the scissors. Leonardo definitely perfected it though.
