Canoeing is simply one method of traveling across water in a (usually) self-propelled manner. As you probably know, a canoe is a narrow watercraft, similar in design to a kayak, but open at the gunwales (sides) to allow two or more people to sit or kneel in the craft, and by rowing, propel the craft forwards across the water. Some canoes are quite large in relation to others-Pacific Islanders are known to use canoes holding twenty or more rowers. Other canoes, such as those popularized by Native Americans, may be designed for only one or two occupants.
