Mary"s superpowers are toned down somewhat in the book- it could have been mere suggestive thought or hypnotic- like ( the Shadow) there are no real bad guys in the books, the sort of l9l0 St.Joseph superman character- and Mary"s sidekick Bert, does not figure in the original books ( not the Disney stories sold at the moviehouses which were themed directly to the Disney film, not the novels for kids.
