The Latin phrase 'de facto' means in fact. In the word-by-word translation, the preposition 'de' means 'from, of'. The noun 'facto' means 'fact'. In its application to segregation, the phrase therefore refers to a separation that exists in reality, not according to the law. One example of 'de facto' segregation may be the description of the city of Montreal, in the Canadian province of Quebec. The city has an international culture. But some neighborhoods and some parts of the city may be described as segregated 'de facto', into separate English and French speaking residential and business areas.

De Jure racism is racism that is backed up by law. Also called Institutional Racism, De Jure racism is upheld by the government. Examples would be southern states not allowing black people to vote in the 1960's and the apartheid laws that were enforced in South Africa .

Racial discrimination can extend from a simple avoidance because of your race or a feature of your race to hate crimes. An example of a racial discrimination would be a company not considering an applicant because the applicant appears to be a minority. In the US, minority could be Mexican or Chinese etc.

Hiring black employees because you believe - or know - that customers prefer to be served by blacks. It is illegal to comply with customer preferences.

Choosing to promote a Hispanic employee over a comparably skilled Black employee to reach a ratio of Hispanic supervisors equal to the ratio of Hispanics in your customer base.

Paying Asian employees more than white or Hispanic employees for the same occupations performed under the same conditions.

Affirmative Action in the United States is racial discrimination, although people do not want to admit it. People getting money for college or being granted admission into a college based partially upon their race is, by definition, racial discrimination.

Judgement: Saying a black person committed a certain type of crime when to choose between him or a white person with no evidence.

Speech: Go eat your rice, yellow boy.
