Italy was formed from several city state nations in 1861. Before that, people thought of themselves as Romans, Lombardians, Sicilians, etc. These city states all spoke Italian but were sometimes under the control of the French, Spanish or Austrians. After World War I, the Fascists, led by Benito Mussolini, took control of the government and made a pact with the Nazis. They attacked Ethiopia and tried to form a colony. Italy lost World War II and began rebuilding. It is part of the European Economic Community and NATO.
