they are solitary creatures that need a lot of space. but due to increasing building and construction they are losing more and more of their habitats, in turn causing them to cross roads and get hit by cars and by moving into residential areas which may cause them to get shot.

In the last few years eight female pumas from Texas were released in the Florida race's territory to put new genes into the local pool, many Florida panthers were showing signs of inbreeding. So far, it appears to be working as several litters have been born. The Texas race was closest geneticly to the Florida.

The Florida panther is a remnant population of the eastern cougar, or mountain lion. As this cat's population dwindled to around 25 or so, scientists determined

the animals were suffering from many ailments associated with inbreeding.

A bold venture was employed, as eight female Texas cougars, a very closely related subspecies, were introduced to add new genes to the population. This seemed to work, as inbreeding problems have all but ceased, and the population has now recovered to over 100 pumas now.

As a species, Puma Concolor, also called mountain lion, puma, cougar, panther, in various locales, is listed as "Least Concern" by the IUCN. The Florida race still faces many problems, such as human encroachment on their range, and remains on the endangered list.

Blank Panthers are not really panthers they are leopards or jaguars. They also drag their prey to the tops of trees to keep their food away from other predators.
Black panthers are sort of a type of a jaguar or leopard. The Jaguar (Latin name: Panthera onca) live in some parts of South, NOT North, America. Some also live in the Amazon.
