In England, the word pantomime means a form of entertainment. The most popular ones being Cinderella, dick Whittington, jack and the beanstalk, Snow White etc.

The pantomime dame was only introduced in the Victorian era. The dame is usually the mother of the hero. Such as:

• dame trott in jack and the beanstalk

• widow twankey in Aladdin

The ugly sisters were unusual though. As they combined of the dame and the villain. The hero used to be called 'the principal boy' and were played by women. Nowadays the hero might be played by men as well.
