∙ 12y agoHarriet Tubman was a slave and ran away to be the second conductor on the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad wasn't really a railroad, it was a system of routes that slaves had to walk through to get to one of the free states.
It was actually a system of routes that fugitives or "slaves" had to endure to get to the northern states where the "conductors" led them to Canada to be completely free of their owner.The slaves had to get to the north on their own for the most part except Harriet Tubman who made up to 19 trips to the south and escorted over 300 slaves to freedom.

∙ 12y agothe underground railroad takes place in the south. slaves that ran from their masters followed the underground railroad to get to safety. the underground railroad reached its peak in the 1850's-1860's. 10,000 slaves are reported to have escaped to canada, but the us census beuro claims only 6,000 made it there.

∙ 13y agofacts about the underground railroad is they used slaves i there to travel north and they useually travled at night because they whites couldn't see them and they would be sleep.in the daylight they would rest till it was night.
also, they started calling it the "Railroad" in 1840 but it had continued before that for a long time.
A main helper was Tubman, who was born into slavery but managed to escape and helped over 300 slaves escape in over 19 trips.

From 1830 to 1860, the Underground Railroad transported more than 50,000 people to safety. The south lost hundreds of slaves each year and between 1810 and1850, an estimated 1000,000 slaves escaped.
A single organization or person did not run the Underground Railroad.
Most of the Underground Railroad workers were in fact blacks and not whites.
Not every slave headed to the north for freedom. Some traveled further south to places such as the Bahamas.
