Lincoln was not a General in the Civil War. His military experience was limited to a short spell as a junior officer in a conflict with Native Americans, many years before. Of course, as President, he was notionally the Supreme Commander, but preferred not to interfere with his Generals' decisions (as his opposite number, Jefferson Davis unwisely did.) In the first half of the war, he was not successful at selecting Generals for promotion, but learned from his mistakes, and was ready to place total faith in U.S. Grant - clearly the right choice.
