What most people think of when they hear the phase ''Flying dinosaurs'' is animals like Pteranodon, Quetzalcoatlus and Rhamphorhynchus and the like. Those were 'flying reptiles' contemporary with dinosaurs. Such flying reptiles were called pterosaurs and they are notdinosaurs.

However there are and were actual 'flying dinosaurs'.

There is now overwhelming evidence that modern day birdsare a type of theropod dinosaur. Therefore the phase 'flying dinosaur' applies to them.

The one of the biggest differences between pterosaurs and actual 'flying dinosaurs', the birds, is that the wing of a pterosaurs is made of a membrane whilst bird wings are made of feathers.

Don't confuse ''flying dinosaurs'' with pterosaurs like Pterodactylus and Pteranodon. Those are not considered dinosaurs.

''Flying dinosaurs'' are only found in the theropod group, maniraptora. And they fly with wings made of feathers.

There are around 10,000 species of dinosaur alive today with wings, we call them birds. These are ''flying dinosaurs''. (Although not all birds fly, like penguins and Ostriches).

There are many fossils of prehistoric maniraptorian dinosaurs that show wings. It's not certain weather those could fly or not.

The basal bird Archeopteryx, the dromeosaur Microraptor and the troodontid Anchiornis are some examples of winged dinosaurs. The famous Velociraptor had quill knobs on its ulna, which show that it too had ''wings'' but probably didn't fly.

pterodactyl

DInosaurs don't fly, reptiles that were similar to dinosaurs did.

There was a group of flying reptiles in the dinosaur times called pterosaurs. These are sometimes called dinosaurs in informal talk, but they technically were not dinosaurs, belonging to a separate but related branch of reptiles.

Most paleontologists today agree that birds are dinosaurs, having evolved from small theropods in the Jurassic period.
