Plastic bags are generally made either of HDPE or LDPE, which respectively stand for Low Density Polypropylene and High Density Polypropylene. Low density of LDPE is due to the presence of side chains in the polymer's chains, phenomenon called branching. The extra branching give special properties such as a lower Young's modulus (lower strength of the material) but higher resistance to strain (tougher material). LDPE will deform more than HDPE before reaching the yield point, neck formation and subsequent breakage of the material. HDPE will support a heavier load but will break more suddenly than LDPE, going through more limited deformation.
