Most of the vegetables we buy today are genetically modified. The "corn" that we buy is a hybrid. Hybrids are genetically modified to be different than their original ancestors. If you are looking for original vegetables, look for "heirloom" vegetables. Those are the ancestors of the things we eat today.

Vegetables that are transgenic, meaning they were created in a lab by taking a gene from one organism (usually a bacteria) and inserting it into another organism (corn, soy, etc.) are not yet sold as fresh vegetables in grocery stores. This will no doubt change soon because a GMO variety of sweet corn has been approved for commercial planting.

Please note: The explanation about transgenic manipulation above is greatly simplified.

Since GMO foods are not labeled, consumers are not informed of the foods that do or do not contain GMOs or what companies are or are not using them; however, in the battles in the states where labeling of GM foods has taken place, most of the major food producers spent thousands or hundreds of thousands of dollars to defeat those bills.

Big-name food companies' foods seldom appear on the Non GMO Project's list of GMO-free foods, which tests foods in order to determine whether they contain GMOs. In fact, most of the foods on the list are made by companies with names that are not well-known.

You can buy GMO foods in any grocery store in the United States, though you would not be able to tell which foods contain GMOs and which ones don't, since GMO foods are not labeled. 70-80% of processed foods in grocery stores contain GMO ingredients.

Tomatoes, Potatoes, Peppers, Corn, Soy, Watermelons, Strawberries, Peanuts and legumes, tree nuts, grains...almost any kind of vegetable, grain, or fruit food has a strain that has been modified, and that 'model' patented. Some have been modified to increase yield, some have been modified to change texture, some have been modified to remove seeds, some have been modified to make them sterile.

There could be fish DNA in your tomato.

Hi

Food has been genetically altered for thousands of years. We would not have the varied varieties of fruit and vegetables, if they had not been genetically altered or cross pollination of species used. And the grain we eat now is vastly improved from grain grown 2000 years ago in Egypt as an example.

I hope this explanation is sufficient, more in-depth explanation can be gained on line see cross pollination.
