It is best to burn oak, maple, ash, or some other hardwood.

What you are really after is something that has a lot of heat output and very little smoke. You can burn coal in a stove that is specifically designed for it - don't assume a wood stove is, because it can burn through the stove. Don't burn trash or plastic in a wood stove.

--- According to the University of Idaho:

"All wood stoves should have sturdy legs, providing at least 4 inches, and preferably 8 to 10 inches, of air space between stove bottom and floor. Glass windows in wood stoves should be special safety glass designed to withstand thermal shock. A stove designed to burn wood only should not be used to burn coal. Some stoves are designed to burn either. The excessive heat of coal will soon burn out the grate or bottom of a stove designed for wood only.

Burn manufactured logs only in an open fireplace they contain wax that burns dangerously hot. "

The ideal firewood ? DRY hardwood- such as oak, hickory, ash, that has been cut and allowed to dry for 12 months. Green wood, and pine/spruce/fir will produce a lot of creosote- which coats the inside of the chimney and smoke pipes- creating a fire hazard. The worst would be a toxic wood- such as poison oak, sumac, or pressure treated wood. Older treated lumber was treated with a mix of Chrome, Copper, and Arsenic.

If by green you mean undried, unseasoned- yes- but it will not burn as well, as will produce more creosote than dry wood. More chimney cleaning.

HOWEVER, if by green you mean treated lumber, no. Much as that was treated with arsenic and chrome to preserve it from rot and insects, and the smoke from that is VERY unhealthy.

In my view, the wood pellets which are made from the different agro-wastes and forestry wastes are the hottest wood all over the world. And owning one pellet machine is a best choice.

I have found pellets to be so expensive as to be more costly than gas, especially when you add the extra most insurance carriers ask for. The hottest burning wood I know of is hedge, aka osage orange. It burns so hot it will melt the grates out of a stove not built for coal, and if you give it too much air, will melt your whole stove.

2nd Answer: Hickory and Oak are probably your best bet.

Hardwood (oak, maple, cherry) that has been dried for at least a year is about the only kinds one should burn. Even with seasoned firewood, your chimney should be cleaned at the end of the season and the beginning. This also will inspect it to make sure it is okay. Always have a fire department check before using the wood stove or fire place! Any questions you may have they can answer. Ken (former firefighter)
