The Igbos of Eastern Nigeria are known for their industry. entrepreneurship. and intelligence. Their philosophy of Igba-nbor makes every Igbo male strive for excellence in all aspects of life to which they are forced to seek for a living in.
In addition, few Igbos would like to be the person who made so much money and failed to help others. This derived from the ancient system of share-cropping whereby a farmer gives seed-yams to a young up-coming fellow, who, through his industry proves his mettle by paying back the seedlings during the next cropping season, and yet, have enough to start off his own farm. With this system, wealth is spread out fairly evenly in the communities where Igbos abound.
In this modern times, the Igbos have adapted this wealth-sharing life to business. A businessman formally takes on a serving boy (not a servant) to help him in his business, and at the same time, to0 learn the rules of the game. After an agreed time passes, the 'master'. is expected to 'settle' his 'boy' with substantial amount of money to help him start off his own business. This form of apprenticeship serves as a sort of business school which offers an assured employment for the hardworking young person. His success is often judged by his building a house, marrying, and helping others behind him, Thus, it continues.
Wish I could write more now, but for some pressing 'business'.
