The original "anointing oil" was made of a formula specified by G-d in the Torah. Its purpose was to consecrate, or set aside, things as special to be used in the Temple, or to anoint people who were being officially consecrated for service to G-d. (Priests, Kings, Prophets, Judges).

The word "messiah" comes from the word "limshoach" which means to pour. A messiah is therefore anyone or anything anointed for service to G-d.

In the times of The Bible, those who were anointed, were anointed by those with the authority to make such consecrations.
