Your biological parents are your birth parents, the two people who conceived you.

However, many birth parents have lost their children through the court system and the children have been adopted. Then, those children can have foster parents or possibly adoptive parents.

Biological parents can also die, leaving minor children. So, many children have a legal guardian, but not necessarily a replacement of someone called "a parent" or "parents". A legal guardians may be grandparents, aunt/uncle, or other relative.

So, it is possible to have biological parents, foster parents, and emotional 'parents' that you choose later in life.

Your parents or legal guardian can be any one who is legally and morally responsible to care for you and meet your basic needs for:

  • food
  • shelter
  • clothing
  • education
  • acceptance
  • nurturing
  • love
  • health
  • and safety

In some cases the state steps in under certain circumstances on behalf of the child/children and assumes the care and welfare of a child or children. Some circumstances for a child being placed in State custody include:

  • parental death - of both parents, or the custodial parent
  • abuse or neglect by the parent
  • custodial parent's severe mental illness
  • custodial parent's drug addiction
  • custodial parent's mental or emotional inability to care for an infant or child
  • custodial parent's behavior that proves they are unfit to parent
  • custodial parent's mental health requires long-term intervention

Children placed in State Custody may be placed with a foster family either temporarily or permanently. A child may be institutionalized IF the child shows severe mental or emotional impairments. Typically, State Agencies attempt reunification (reuniting) biological parents with their child/children, but sometimes parental rights are terminated.

ALL and SOME CHILDREN

  1. So, all children have biological parents even if the child never lives with the parents even for one day.
  2. Some children may have foster parents not related to them (this is most typical of foster care).
  3. Some children may have foster parents who ARE related to them.
  4. Other children have a Legal Guardian with whom the child lives and the guardian acts as a parent. Often the Legal Guardian IS a relative.
  5. Some children may have "adoptive parent" (one person) or "adoptive parents" (a married couple) as a court sanctioned legal process in which the child's last name is changed to the Adoptive Parents' last name. However, in some Adoptions, the biological parent/parents might be invited to remain part of the child's life. But this is not always the case.
  6. Some children might emotionally pick an outsider whom they regard as a parental figure, but that adult has no legal standing or rights in the child's life. The child still has a "parent" or legal guardian responsible to be a parent to the child.
  7. Later in life, adult children might pick a favorite person whom the adult child refers to as an (emotional) 'parent', but again, there is no legal ties between the two people.

ADDITIONALLY

Though a man / the father is required to conceive a child, the father may never know or be involved with a woman after the woman conceives. In those cases, he is still the "biological father" who contributed half of a child's DNA. His medical history may affect the child. So he will always be the biological father even if the father and child never know each other. Same with a mother who gives up an infant at birth or up to age 3/4 yrs old (the child that young may not remember the mother). Person who assume legal care of a child in these situations can be called "parents" even though they are not biological parents. A biological single mother may marry, providing a legal father / parent for the child, and that man may even adopt the child, but that father is not the biological father.
