  • Increased risk of infections
  • Loss of calcium from bones, which can lead to osteoporosis and fractures
  • Menstrual irregularities
  • Suppressed adrenal gland hormone production
  • Thin skin, easy bruising and slower wound healing

Side effects of inhaled corticosteroids:

If part of the drug deposits in your mouth instead of making it to your lungs, you may experience:

  • Coughing
  • Hoarseness
  • Dry mouth
  • Sore throat
  • May slow growth rate in children, but studies show it does not affect final adult height

Rinsing the mouth out and gargling after each application may decrease the risk of side effects, but do not swallow it, spit it out.

Side effects of topical corticosteroids can include:

  • thin skin
  • red lesions
  • acne
