When trying to identify an unknown device what are some advantages to using a boot CD over running diagnostic programs in Windows?

The primary advantage of using a boot CD is that the tools on the CD can check files that would otherwise be memory-resident if you were booting from Windows.
Also, many boot CDs are Linux based, and the tools available on them may have more diagnostic functionality than the standard Windows based ones.

For the purposes of this question I'm assuming you are running a PC running Windows 7 Save your work and close all browsers and any other applications apart from Windows and run the 'Windows Memory Diagnostic' app. To do this type 'mem' in the Windows 'Search programs and files' box that appears when you click the Windows icon (bottom left of your screen). This is enough for Windows to identify that you want Windows Memory Diagnostic. Select it and run it, this will restart your PC and automatically check your RAM for problems.... At least this way you should know if your RAM has a detectable fault.

it all depends. You ask some, it would be macs other would say windows. mine is neither as i use Linux on my computers. windows is real easy to use and have tons of programs, are computer with windows are cheaper. Mac can be more expensive to start out on, but can last longer since there upgrades are cheaper and don't require as much of a jump in hardware specs like windows can. you also don't have as many programs to run on macs, but theirs ways around that. So it really all depends on your preference.
