Well I'm an actor in NYC and I'll tell you what I do. I'm in SAG-AFTRA so I can do background/stand-in work any day of the week and earn between $150 to $500 and sometimes more (on a very good day) in one day.
I also have a BA degree & Paralegal Diploma so I can temp during down times. I also have a real estate license that will allow me to basically work from home or better yet my cell phone. I have a per diem job that works 1 to 2 days a week for a couple of hours doing Diabetes seminars. I audition all the time for commercials, print modeling and voice overs that I will sometimes book and last but not least I have my license to drive a NYC yellow cab that I can basically pick up any day of the week that I may need to work.
And finally of worse comes to worse I will collect unemployment.
Basically to be an up and coming actor you've got to find a hustle that will allow you to work when you want too. And that's what I've done. It took time to get here but it works for me.
most actors have parties or celebrate at the end of a successful play all the actors in the play that i did went out to dinner to celebrate

No actors do not have to be smart to play smart characters. All you have to do is act smart and know your lines to say in the play.
Having a bunch of amateur actors put on a play as a part of Shakespeare's play allowed Shakespeare to make fun of inept playwrights and actors which helped the audience appreciate the skill of Shakespeare and his fellow actors.
Since the only people who are "in" a play are the characters and the actors, and since the characters do totally different things depending on which character they are and what play it is, you must mean the actors. What do actors do in Elizabethan plays? They act, of course. Same as any other play.
