Cars were fairly common at this point. In Germany they were working hard on the Volkswagon, or 'people's car'. There are lots of great sites about the 1940s. It won't be too difficult to look up some more about this era.

Of similar sizes, but different shapes, to cars today. Not so many 'mini' style cars in the 1940s.
Some cars such as Rolls Royces and Maybachs are made by hand to ensure perfection and some cars like Bentlys and Bugattis are made by hand because the shape is to complex for a machine but most normal cars are not.
