Sign language is important because it allows us to communicate to the deaf and mute people. This is a very general question, and being a Deaf Studies Major myself in college I somewhat take offense as to why this is being asked. but anyway to answer your question sign language is important because it is a mode of communication for Deaf people, not hearing impaired people!!!!!!!!!!!! that is a negative connotation and is NOT politically correct as rumor says it is, Deaf is the proper term. American Sign Language is the language i have spent years learning. I myself am hearing but Deaf culture fascinates me, so i learned it and still learning for that matter to become an interpreter someday. so ASL, american sign language, is a true language with its own grammar, idioms, nouns, verbs etc. it is a totally different language then English that's for sure! it is a part of a close knit community and if that interests you look into your local community colleges for a class. ASL1 is generally vocabulary building and is a good step to understanding why it is another language for another group of people. hope that helped
