Julius was a stubborn and self centered ruler. Augustus was the exact opposite. Julius loved Cleopatra. Augustus hated her and then killed her later on. Julius (well... loved sleezy women) Augustus didn't. Now for the similarities: They bothed name months after their names. July and August. They were both rulers of Rome. They were related. They are two different people, but Julius and Augustus were both on the same political wavelength. The main difference between the two was that Julius grew arrogant and Augustus was a smart enough politician to appear humble and just another citizen, at least in public. Another difference was that Augustus shared power mainly with Marcus Agrippa, whereas Julius delegated very little real power.

Augustus Caesar gained office by force and was entitled to hold office until his death or forcible ouster. He had near-absolute power.

Barack Obama was elected by a majority of voters and must run for reelection or resign after four years in office. His power is limited by the Constitution and other laws, and by the will of Congress.

Sulla attempted to stabilise Roman government to end civil war - he extended the Dictatorship for two years, and imagining things were fixed, retired.

The troubles of the civil war returned as generals fought for dominance again, so Caesar made himself Dictator for Life to keep permanent control of them. They solved the lifelong problem by and obviously easy action - terminated the life-dictator's life.

Augustus did not set himself up as a target, ruling through indirect means - taking the power of a tribune of the plebs which gave him veto powers over the senate; he took the powers of a proconsul which gave him consular powers outside the city; and gave the settled provinces to the senate while taking the border provinces himself, and that was where the army was located. And he called himself Princeps (First Citizen) to avoid any suggestion of kingship or dictatorship which had brought Caesar down (Emperor is a much later title - for 200 years they were Princeps. His title Augustus was also a deliberately vague one - 'great man' - to avoid the knives).

Augustus Caesar took the softly-softly approach. He shared power with the Senate and took the reserve powers of tribune of the plebs, proconsul and the border provinces where the armies were.
