Since the Crucible was written during the time of McCarthyism, the whole play is pretty much a metaphor for it. In the Crucible, people claim that there are witches and are posesed by the Devil. In McCarthyism, ramdom people were accused of being communists. If you didnt like someone all you had to do was lie and say they were communists. the same was true in the Crucible. one guy in the play, accusses someone of being a witch because he wanted his land. another accuses even the most nobel of citizens of being a witch. the play was designed to poke fun at McCarthyism and to show just how ridiculous it really was. by the end of the play the people begin to realize it has gone to far. this is the same as in McCarthyism, his "witch hunt" ended because people lost ffaith in what he was doing.

Everything is (completely) different! John is a recovering alcoholic right of rehab just trying to have a fresh start in the subways of Chicago. Abigail is a prostitute on the streets of New York City just trying to make some money. In the end John Proctor and Abigail never meet once and John instead meets Bob Saget and they have 3 children together and film Full House. Abigail eventually dies from the sexual transmitted diseases that she contained in her system from the prostitution. All together the book was better and the film was a waste of my time.

All I can think of for similarities is that in both the book and movie, Giles Corey had weight put on top of him because they were trying to get some information from him, but all he said was "More weight!" And the girl in the beginning of the book and movie took her clothes off and she was naked. Also, when Abigail was in court at one time she pretended like Mary was hurting her and then all of the other girls including Abigail started mimicking what she was saying.

The crucible is about the Salem witch trials of 1692. Some differences between the play/book and the movie are: Hale's wife is mentioned in the movie and not in the playwright or book; In the movie Abigail visits John Proctor while he is in jail but in the play/book she does not; The opening scene of the girls dancing in the movie isn't in the book until later and is only mentioned but not described.

How would the Salem witch trials connect to McCarthyism?

First, I must point out that the correct phrasing is 'how would McCarthyism connect to the Salem Witch trials" as the Salem panic occurred earlier. That being said, there is no direct connection. Nothing that happened in Salem affected or influenced McCarthyism. However, they are often associated because of Arthur Miller's Crucible, a play extremely loosely based on the events Salem. Miller wrote the play using the most general facts about Salem to juxtapose the two in order to show the similarities between the ridiculous nature of the Salem accusations and the McCarthyist accusations.
