The most common product from biotechnology processes are recombinant proteins. Briefly, a cell line or recombinant strain (a bacterium strain genetically modified) is placed in a vessel or bioreactor with all necessary nutrients (carbohydrates, growth factors, vitamins, sometime antibiotics, etc.) in order to allow the recombinant organism to growth properly and to express or synthesize a protein from a particular gene that has been inserted into its genome by DNA techniques. Once the culture remains a particular period of time, with proper temperature, ideal dissolved oxygen levels and some other gases, the recombinant proteins are then purified from the culture, either from bacteria bodies or biomass or from the media supernatant when the culture has been carried out with a cell line (most of the time from a mammalian organism). As examples of recombinant proteins widely used in pharmaceutics are: interferons, human growth hormone, erythropoietin, granulocytic colony stimulating factor, MAbs (monoclonal antibodies), among many others.

There are quite a lot of pharmaceuticals are made in industry with the same technology. Antibiotics, therapeutics antibodies, fermented beverages are also products of biotech oriented.
