In Japanese culture, there are many superstitions linked to death:
- do not pass food from one set of chopsticks to another, this is how cremated remains are handled. Very bad luck.
- when setting out your bedding (a futon), do not face the head of the futon towards the north. This is how the deceased are layed at funerals.
- the number 4 is unlucky because it is pronounced the same way as the word for death: 'shi'.
- do not whistle at night, it is said to summon spirits
Also try looking at Halloween and it's origins. Originally, it was beleived that this was the night when the veil between the living world and the dead world was at it's thinnest. Dead realtives could come back to visit; hence the "trick or treat". By dressing up, bad spirits were scared away.
