There are many different genres of anime, as many as there are for movies - scifi, fantasy, romance, comedy, etc.

The ones listed above would be considered romance, and basically for girls (a category called shojo, meaning the target audience is young girls).

I suggest going on wikipedia itself, and searching under a category of anime:

shojo: for young girls, idealized romances, etc (Fushigi Yugi, Sailor Moon)

shonen: for young boys, lots of action, etc. (Naruto, Bleach)

seinen: for older males, depicting more realistic relationships (Honey and Clover, Shakugan no Shana)

josei: for older women, again depicting more realistic relationships (Nana, Paradise Kiss).

Recommendation 4

Classic anime, that eveyone should see no matter what, include: FLCL, Akira (movie), Cowboy Bebop, Full Metal Alchemist, Evangelion, Samurai Champloo, Escaflowne, and the list goes on.
