Some sports have only made one or two appearances in the Olympics or their popularity has faded. Some of the more unusual sports that now no longer appear in the Olympics have been:

In the old world, possibly it's the Ket language spoken in Central Siberia. It's a moribund language of the Yeniseian family, and the sole survivor of this family, which… might possibly represent the oldest remaining language stock in siberia (other languages have, possibly, over time edged out Yeniseian, which used to be spoken over quite a wide area). It's completely unrelated to any other language around it, exhibits complex verbal morphology, and theories exist linking it in the very distant past to Native American languages (the Na-Dene family) and Chinese. A few hundred people speak it now, so there are probably other languages around that are more "obscure", depending on how you define the word, but Ket is definitely special.
Some of the original sports in the Olympics were running, wrestling, and later boxing. Today there are 26 events in the summer Olympics and sports in the winter.

That would be fencer Aladar Gerevich of Hungary who won gold in team Sabre at the 1932, 1936, 1948, 1952, 1956, and 1960 Olympics. He is the only athlete in the history of the… Olympics to win gold in the same event in six different Olympic Games.

Through the 2006 Games in Turin, that is women's singles figure skating with 23 (7 gold, 8 silver, 8 bronze) followed by men's 500 meter speed skating with 16 (7 gold, 5 silve…r, 4 bronze).

Gymnastics is very popular, because the gymnasts are AMAZING. Also, swimming is popular. Actually, I believe every sport in the Olympics is popular.
