Who doesn't own a bottle of windex?! Sure, it's not exactly a home remedy, but pretty much every person i know has some windex. Just spray the ants and it stops them dead in their tracks, literally!

During the summer, my house gets a lot of ants. one night they were just all over and my mom is just like "go get something! anything!" so i went to the laundry room and got some windex and started spraying the ants. windex stops ants dead in their tracks! you can even leave little puddles around the house so that they just crawl right into it. Not only is this a truly effective way to kill ants, but extremely cheap! I hope this helps you!

∙ 8y agoAnt killer has special chemicals which will penetrate the ant's skin. Or they eat it and carry it back to their nest, where the other ants will eat it.
The first ant killers used heavy metals and killed ants roughly the same way it would kill humans who ingested the same elements in high enough concentrations.
A better question is how pesticides in general work. They work in a number of different ways, depending on the type. Two examples are organophosphates and carbamates. Both disrupt the enzyme that regulates the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Most organophosphates are insecticides, and some are very poisonous. Their effects on insects are similar to their effects on humans. There are several subgroups within the carbamates.
