A Step Up Transformer is one whose secondary voltage is greater than its primary voltage. This kind of transformer "steps up" the voltage applied to it.

The Step Up transformer is designed to increase the voltage from the primary winding to the secondary winding.

A Step-Down transformer is one whose secondary voltage is less than its primary voltage. The step down transformer is designed to reduce the voltage from the primary winding to the secondary winding. This kind of transformer "steps down" the voltage applied to it.

The basic equation for stepping up or stepping down the voltage

Np/Ns is known as the turns ratio.

The induced voltage in the secondary winding (Vs) is in proportion to the primary voltage (Vp) and is given by the ratio of the number of turns in the secondary (Ns) to the number of turns in the primary (Np).

Step up transformer is used to increase the output voltage for good transmission of electricity.

How it is useful to good transmission of electricity?

Answer:

due to increase in the voltage by using step up transformer and for higher voltages we use the wires which have less area of cross section of the wires which are used do transmit the electricity........................

'R(resistance)' propotional to (specific heat*length of the conductor)/area of cross section;

So,

R increases;

I=V/R;(ohm's law)

I decreases;

so, not fully harmful.

It reduces the usage of copper.

Step down Transformers are used for household purposes.

where less voltage required than the we receiving from powerstations.

Example:

For ex,

phone charger

we receiving 230-240 volts but phone requires about 4Volts.Hence we are using stepdown transformer to decrease and maintain the voltage which is suitable for phone.

I think, i'll may be helpful.

A step-up transformer is a transformer that receives its voltage lower than its output voltage (it 'steps-up ' the voltage). While a step-down transformer is a transformer that receives the voltage higher than the output voltage, thus, stepping down the voltage.

Step-up Transformer example... 120 V input, steps up to 1000 V output.

Constructionally they are differ in the number of turns in the primary and secondary.

A step up transformer has its secondary turns n2 more than primary turns. So they are used to step up or increase the voltage.

A step down transformer has more primary turns compared to the primary. So they are used to step down or reduce the voltage.

Generally a step up transformer is defined as a transformer that converts a low voltage to a higher voltage, or alternatively converts a high current into a low current.

The loading effect of the CT on the primary conductor is very minimal, meaning the primary side voltage across the CT is very low; primary current is obviously very high relative to the secondary. Secondary voltage, then, must be high relative to primary, and current will be low.

A transformer can be either a step-up or a step-down transformer. It all depends on the turns ratio between the primary and secondary windings.

On a step up transformer the primary voltage is lower than the secondary voltage. On a step down transformer the primary voltage is higher than the secondary voltage.

Why are transformers necessary?

Transformers are necessary to stepup or stepdown voltage levels so that transmission of power is convenient. without stepup/stepdown voltage level according to our requirement losses will be very high and transmission and usage of power is not feasible.

Stepdown Transformer.

How do you step down voltage in transformers?

step up or stepdown is done by the ratio of the number of turns in the primary / secondary coil, large number on high voltage side small number on low voltage side. the wire used on the low voltage side would be thicker than the high.

Does 110 volts cost more if uses stepdown trasformer?

If you have to pay for the stepdown transformer, yes. If that is provided free, there is a small loss of energy in the transformer, maybe about 5%, and it depends on whether the meter is installed before or after the transformer.
