DNA and RNA are polymers. Collectively, DNA and RNA are called nucleic acids. The subunits of nucleic acids are called nucleotides. Nucleotide monomers form nucleic acid polymers. A nucleotide has 3 parts to it: a phosphate group, a sugar (ribose in RNA and deoxyribose in DNA), and a base (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine or Uracil - Thymine is found only in DNA and Uracil is found only in RNA, but the other 3 bases may be found in either.) Another name for it would be nitrogenous base.

Each nucleotide consists of a pentose (5-carbon) sugar, a nitrogen-containing baseand a phosphate group. The pentose sugar in DNA is deoxyribose. In RNA it is ribose. The name of the DNA subunit is a nucleotide. There are three parts, there is a sugar, a base, and a phosphate group. The sugar is the pentose sugar known as deoxyribose (the D in DNA). The "deoxy" just means that it is "missing" an oxygen group compared ribose. The base is what makes up the "language" of DNA. There are four possible bases, adenine, thymine, cytosine, and guanine. The phosphate and the sugar form the backbone of the DNA and are the same in every nucleotide.
