Addiction is an area where neuroscience is altering previous assumptions almost on a daily basis. In a few short years, many of our previous notions about addiction will likely have been overturned.

Before neuroscientists began to study the topic, several different theories about addiction were put forward by all kinds of people from lay people to medical doctors. In one theory, it was proposed that there are three stages to addiction. The first stage is called the emotional stage. The person is in need of comfort or excitement and usually uses something unhealthy to fulfill the satisfaction of that need. The person feels better after using, but eventually it wears off and they start again. The second stage is the mental addiction where the person is mentally hooked to whatever substance or action it is that makes them feel good. The person will continue this addiction even socially at this stage. In the final stage, the physical addiction, the person is taken over by the addiction and has a very hard time surviving without it. Over time, the person builds a tolerance to the drug/addiction and needs it in higher doses. The addict can not control his/her need for the drug anymore and depending on the substance used, the addict will go through sever withdrawal symptoms causing a physical or emotional pain if the addict stops using. So to wrap it up in one sentence, the three stages of process addiction are the emotional stage, the mental addiction stage and the physical addiction stage.
