MANILA, Philippines - It is said that one cannot judge a book by its cover and this may also be true for people, places, and events. But in the realm of governance, leaders of nations are subject to microscopic analysis - general or partial.
Tradition dictates that a new leader is weighed according to his achievements and shortcomings, perhaps with a grain of human understanding or a tinge of consideration for his first 100 days in office.
President Benigno S. Aquino III is no exception. He is marking his first 100 days in office Friday, October 8, 2010, with assessments given by several sectors.
From Day One, when he took his oath of office at noon of June 30, 2010, at Rizal National Park, Luneta, Manila, his performance was closely followed by leaders of both government and the private sector, as well as the international community. The overall picture is that of a President committed to fulfill his promises and goals of improved quality of life for his people. It is a promise anchored on the legacies of his famous parents - the martyr Senator Benigno S. Aquino Jr. and former President Corazon C. Aquino.
It is believed that President Aquino, despite some perceived flaws, still enjoys the trust of the people, which upon his assumption to office reached a record high of +85 percent. With his popularity and high trust rating, most people view his first 100 days with flying colors. Many sectors have made known their assessments, depending on factors such as party or political affiliation. Others would prefer to give him a chance to prove his worth in the coming days, as 100 days is deemed too short.
Despite the trappings of power, President Aquino remains simple and humble, and this has helped endear him to many people, especially the less privileged who can identify with his simplicity and humility.
It is still a long way to go for President Aquino in the next six years. The Filipino people are optimistic that he will remain steadfast and firm in his vow to help improve their lives and make certain that the benefits of reforms will reach the greatest majority of his countrymen.
The Manila Bulletin Publishing Corporation led by its Chairman Dr. Emilio T. Yap, Directors, Officers, Editors, and Staff wish President Benigno S. Aquino III, his Cabinet, and the men and women in his administration all the best and success in all their present and future endeavors.
