Normally, the driver is a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). Paramedics are normally on board an ambulance. This is referred to as an Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit. A Basic Life Support (BLS) unit can consist of two EMT's and not have a paramedic on board. The person being treated in the ambulance is called the patient.

In America, on a ground vehicle ambulance, nurses are not required and almost never attend. Pretty much the only time you'll see a nurse in a standard ambulance, is if one of the EMT's is training to become a nurse. Medivac Flights (chopper or plane), however, almost always have at least one nurse on crew. Other countries use different protocols and may dispatch doctors and/or nurses with the unit.
