Carbon itself settles out of the earth's atmosphere fairly quickly, and although it lowers earths albedo (in the form of soot on snow, etc.) it tends to get absorbed. Carbon combined with oxygen to form the molecule CO2 has a pretty large climate impact in terms of the sheer volume of it humans have been pumping into the atmosphere each year.

Carbon combined with four hydrogens (CH4) is an even more potent greenhouse gas, it is just released in much smaller quantities at the present time.

Hydrogen combined with oxygen (H2O) is another important self-regulating greenhouse gas.

----------------------------

If you're not referring specifically to chemical elements, things that can affect climate are orbital cycles, axial tilt, variations in solar output (which are small across geologic time scales--our sun is a fairly stable G class star), changes in albedo, volcanic out-gassing, and carbon sequestration, among others.

Changes in albedo can occur as desert replaces forest, decreasing albedo and subsequently increasing the temperature. Another example is polar ice melt. Ice is highly reflective, but dark ocean water absorbs much more energy.

Carbon sequestration naturally occurs as plants or organisms pull carbon out of the atmosphere. Early in earth's history there was a period of calcareous coccolithophores (chalk) and marine organisms whose shell concretions formed large limestone deposits. The carbon taken out of the atmosphere reduced earth's temperature. Another example are the Permian coal deposits, which pulled gigatons of carbon out of the atmosphere over millions of years.

Today, across a span of mere decades, humans have been liberating much of that carbon back into the atmosphere, dramatically increasing earth's temperature.
