The fundamental principal of the US Constitution is summed up well in the US Declaration of Independence " That whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it and to provide new guards for their future security"

The US constitution and in fact all Lawfull democratic Constitutions is just an elaborate and detailed way of describing that governments exist to protect the peoples natural Rights and Liberty, and to provide them with adaquate security, and that the source for all of the Governments powers flow from the Soveriegn People.

The Five Principles of Government found in the Constitution of the United States are---Popular Sovereignty; Checks and Balances; Federalism; Limited Power of the Government; Separation of Branches. Popular Sovereignty means the ultimate power rests with the people. Checks and Balances means that no one branch of the government can overpower the other branches of government. Each has a check on the power of the other branches. Federalism is the dividing and sharing of power between state and national governments. Limited power means that the government is restricted by the laws and the Constitution and it has to operate within the framework of the laws and Constitution. Separation of Branches divides the government into the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial Branch, each with its own powers and duties.

The main principle in the U.S. Constitution is DIVIDED powers.

The President has certain powers, but cannot interfere in the Legislature. The Legislature has certain specific ("enumerated") and limited powers. In the original Constitution, the House of Representatives were to represent the people, while the Senate was to represent the independent State governments.

The passage of the 17th Amendment greatly altered the "checks and balances" of the Constitution.
