There are several reasons studying history is important. One of the most important reasons is to prevent repeating mistakes, and also to emulate successful models. This can be applied to single individuals as well as entire nations.

Taking history is a course that will help your writing skill, your public speaking skills and most importantly your analysis skills. All these are useful skills to have if you plan in entering a law school.

Whether ancient or medieval, renaissance or modern, personal or national, or anything else besides, history is worthy studying for several reasons. Perhaps most importantly, it provides life-lessons relevant to contemporary problems and opportunities: by seeing what people did or did not do in the past, one can live more effectively in the present. Also important is the effect that studying history can have on one's awareness: to see what has happened in the past that leads directly to the present, one can see what forces and events have led to one's own self, one's family, one's society, etc., as all of these presently stand. This history-based insight can be tremendously empowering on many levels.
