What cast iron used for?

Cast iron skillets are used for frying and baking. I use mine to fry bacon and eggs, and to bake cornbread. They are non-sticking if they have been seasoned. To season a skillet, cover the inside of the skillet with a thin coat of oil and put it into a hot oven (400). Turn off the oven and let the oil cook onto the skillet. It will form a coating that is non-sticking. Never wash your skillet in soapy water because that will remove the coating. When the coating is washed off or wears off re-season it. I have a skillet that is over 50 years old. It doesn't wear out, it doesn't get dented, and if you always keep it seasoned it won't rust.

Skillets are most often made from cast iron, and that is where they get their heavy structure, ideal for many cooking methods. A skillet can be defined as a small frying pan (frypan) or - mainly in parts of the UK - a small saucepan; it can be made of any suitable materials, usually metal.

What are some qualities that determine a good cast iron skillet?

First, do research on the company and make sure they do not use unsafe chemicals or heavy metals in their product that may leach into food. Cast iron skillets can be purchased pre-seasoned, however, most cooks claim that a well used pan that is allowed to retain oil over time becomes nonstick and cooks evenly.

What is the colour of iron after rusting?

As for the most of rough surfaces of cast iron, the color is grey. Such as normal grey cast iron and ductile iron. The ductile iron will be more white than grey cast iron. There are few types of vermicular cast iron, which are black. The white cast iron will show white color. So, cast iron has different color, such as grey, black, white according to different types. However, most of cast iron castings need surface coating, such as painting or electroplate, so they will show different colors than their own.
