There are many causes for scoliosis which are
congenital
genetic
neuromuscular
Other causes for scoliosis include cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy and tumors
scoliosis are of 2 types:
structural
non structural
congenital scoliosis can be due to :
hemivertebrae
block vertebrae
paralytic scoliosis is due to unbalanced paralysis of trunk muscles
other causes are:
neurofibromatosis
Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine, majority of people with Scoliosis are diagnosed "idiopathic", meaning "unknown" so these cases have no reason why they have been diagnosed.
Some forms of Scolisois come as a bi-condition from something else such as Polio or Cerebral Palsy
Uneven legs could be it but most cases are uknown. It is also belived to be genetic. Does someone in your family have it? I have scoliosis.
Degenerative scoliosis may be caused by degeneration of the discs which separate the vertebrae or Arthritis in the joints that link them.
Neuromuscular scoliosis is due to loss of control of the nerves or muscles which support the spine. The most common causes of this type of scoliosis are cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.
While we don't have definite answer yet, research into the Serotonin - Melatonin conversion pathway looks promising.
It's ginetics.
The causes of scoliosis are unknown, not only in children but in everyone in general however ive got a great resource site for you for all the information about childrens scoliosis maybe it will answer the rest of the questions you have. http://www.niams.nih.gov/Health_Info/Scoliosis/default.asp
There are many causes. The most common is of a birth defect where the tissue near the spine is abnormal. The spine then begins to show scoliosis during adolesence.
Scoliosis is a side-to-side curvature of the spine. Neuromuscular scoliosis is due to loss of control of the nerves or muscles which support the spine. The most common causes of this type of scoliosis are cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy.
No, scoliosis is not contagious. The majority of scoliosis is termed idiopathic, which means that the medical community does not know what causes it. The majority of scoliosis in adolescents is idiopathic. There are congenital causes of scoliosis which often cause patients to have large curves at a very young age due to malformed vertebrae. These scolioses can be associated with spinal cord abnormalities as well as heart and kidney problems. Neuromuscular scoliosis occurs in patients who have abnormal nerve and/or spinal cord function such as in cerebral palsy, spina bifida, or spinal cord injury. Adult scoliosis can be from an adolescent scoliosis, or it can be what is termed a degenerative scoliosis. Scoloiosis is viewed (in general) as a lateral curvature of the spine with an axial twist that causes a distortion of the ribs. Majority of the cases scoliosis is called idiopathic, which means that the medical community does not know what causes it. There have been recent studies that suggest that there is a genetic component to adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Neuromuscular scoliosis occurs as a result of abnormalities in nerve function which control the trunk musculature, such as spina bifida and cerebral palsy.
Congenital scoliosis is due to congenital abnormal formation of the bones of the spine, and is often associated with other organ defects.
Scoliosis affects the skeletal system. The causes of scoliosis are largely unknown. There is congenital scoliosis and neuromuscular scoliosis which describes spinal curvature caused by diseases like polio or cerebral palsy. This last type is caused by muscle abnormality but the boney spine is affected.
scoliosis is a disability because it impares your ability in certain postures, also causes stress when carrying shopping and sleeping etc.
No. The slight curvature it causes in the spine has no impact on lifespan.
Scoliosis is a disease that causes a rotating spine. Age can also cause the spin to rotate or curve unnaturally.
That is called a scoliosis. You can remember the 'S' shaped spine of Scoliosis.
scoliosis can not be prevented
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ this is actually incorrect. IDIOPATHIC SCOLIOSIS HAS NO KNOWN CAUSE you CANNOT get it from 'bending over too much' or 'carrying a heavy bag' you will get it regardless. other forms of scoliosis however have known causes yes it happens more in girls than boys, 2% of healthy boys will get scoliosis where as the percentge of girls is much much higher when i say healthy boys, i mean boys who have no health problems / disabilities scoliosis seems to go hand in hand with heart conditions other muscular diseases such as muscular distrophy / ostrophy etc. people often perk up at that when i say 'health problems' note, this does not include any mental illnesses such as depression or anxiety. mostly just heart and muscle conditions. (although scoliosis can cause other mental conditions to arise, sadly)
