We really don't know. It happens to some people and not others, so there may be a genetic disposition since it seems to run in familied. There may also be an environmental factor, or factors, such as exposure to aluminum, or deficiencies or excesses in diet.

Controllable Risk Factors

• Obesity increases risk
• High insulin levels increases risk.
• Brain exercise decreases risk, including reading, games, playing instruments, and dancing.

Uncontrollable

• People with Down syndrome get Alzheimer's at much higher rate than the general population.
• People with inherited Diabetes are at higher risk.
• Age. As you get older, especially over 65, the risk increases and more damage is done to the Brain.

Alzheimers disease is caused by the neurons in the brain not functioning properly and the connections between them failing. The brain breaks down and shrinks. Symptoms include: memory loss, concentration loss, loss of coordination, loss of self awareness and in extreme cases, loss of speech.
