With the advent of the Civil Rights Movement in the early and mid 1950's some African American artists were getting airplay on pop radio stations. People like Pat Boone and Elvis Presley took full advantage of the situation and covered some of the more popular Black hits. Pat Boone became rich making some awful sounding covers, while Elvis at least had some style.

∙ 11y agoIn the late 40's to mid-50's there was a lot of very good "race" music, which featured black singers and groups, and distributed primarily to black audiences. White record companies wanted a piece of the action, so they had white artists release "clean" versions of the most popular black music. The white cover versions generally outsold the original black versions many times over.
