Within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) there is nobody with the title of "Pastor". The leader of the congregation is called a "Bishop". The Bishop fills a similar role as a Pastor in most Christian churches.

It may be helpful to understand the organization of Mormon priesthood offices in order to understand the difference between a Bishop and a Priest. Within Mormonism, all worthy males (most practicing men) are ordained to the priesthood. At age 12, one may be ordained as a Deacon. At age 14, one may be ordained as a Teacher. At age 16, a boy may be ordained as a Priest. These are all offices in the Aaronic Priesthood. Mormons believe this is the same priesthood that Aaron, brother of Moses, was given. At 18, one is eligible to be ordained an Elder. Those adult men serving in higher ranking leadership positions are generally ordained as High Priests. Elders and High Priests are offices in the Melchizedek Priesthood. Mormons believe this is the the same priesthood that the Old Testament Melchizedek held. Each of these five offices build on each other in responsiblity and authority - so an ordained Priest also has the power and responsibility of a Deacon and Teacher.

A Bishop must have previously been ordained as a Deacon, Teacher, Priest, Elder, and High Priest. However, the Bishop is also technically a Priest and serves as the president of all the Priests in his congregation.

The differences are:

-there is only one Bishop in each congregation, but there are usually many Priests.

-Bishop is a temporary position usually of four to seven years, Priest is a lifetime ordination.

-Bishops are required to be married men and have generally been members of the church for quite some time. Priests are as young as 16 and may have been members of the church for as little as one day.

-Priests may perform baptisms and bless the sacrament, but only under the direction of the Bishop.

-the Bishop is responsible for the day to day operations of the congregation as well as counseling and shepherding each of the members. The Priests may assist in many ways if called upon.

Is there a branch of Mormons with different beliefs than the original Mormon church?

I'm just learning about the mormons religon but I do not thank they have a differnet beleif then any other mormons. They come from all around to teach us the good and great , powerful lord , jesus christ & will all ways do the same belief to all persons of the relgion. -------- another answer: There are many small groups which have split off from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) for different reasons. Some people still consider members of these groups Mormon because they still believe in the Book of Mormon and Joseph Smith, however there are some major differences between them and the original mainstream Mormon church. The largest of these breakoff groups are the Community of Christ, the FLDS, and the Apostolic United Brethren. The Mormon Church considers these to be apostate groups and does not accept them as Mormon.

Is it God's will to show Mormonism hypocrisy as they have gay men holding the priesthood and loved by their God as long as they never reveal their secret?

AnswerIt is always dangerous to speak on behalf of God's will.Mormon AnswerNowhere in the Mormon Church does it say that Mormon high priests cannot reveal that they are gay. Gay people are welcomed in the Church, so long as they live by the standards that every Church member is expected to follow (including no sexual relations outside of marriage or with someone of the same gender). Both the Church and it's members have no problem with gay priests who are living the standards of the church, and they may 'come out' with their homosexuality or leave it a secret - that is their choice. It is not hypocrisy in any way - gay Mormon men are expected to follow the same standards as straight Mormon men, and any man who follows these standards has the same rights and privileges, except that gay Mormon men are required to be lonely.
