Assessmentof Learning - testing the knowledge retention when a a person is educated in a subject matter

Assessment for Learning - is establishing the skills level a person has before they undertake any learning. e.g. If training a person to measure 2 pieces of wood, fix together to gain a length that has to be cut to a final size it would be advisable to ensure that the person was familiar with basic maths as it will require addition and subtraction. If these basic skills are not there then the training to cut the wood will fail

Is there such a thing is best assessment method or an assessment method that is appropriate for all types of learning?

None, for our group there is no assessment method that will suite for all kinds of learning because it depends and varies on the different factors such as: needs of the learners, the learning outcomes that should be assessed, individual differences and multiple intelligences of the learners, facilities and materials to be used , the purpose of assessment and others. Learners are the main factor to be considered in choosing the best assessment method to be used. In assessing learners should be the center of the assessment process because they are the ones to be assessed.

What is the difference between formative and summative assessment?

Formative assessment is generally carried out by students during a course of study to help to shed light on the process of learning. Summative assessment is typically taken towards the end of the study to provide an objective scoring of the learning. Formative is 'when the cook tastes the soup' while summative is when 'the guests taste the soup'.Formative assessment helps to aid students in improving their learning process rather than place emphasis on the end result. Summative assessment provides a measure of how well the student has succeeded.
