Traditionally, all Christians believe the follow 2 doctrines concerning Mary: 1. She was a virgin at the time of the birth of Jesus, who was not conceived through human sexual intercourse but by the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:26-38) 2. She was the Theotokos (literally 'God-bearer') because Christ was God-incarnate(John 1:1-18) Catholicism adds other doctrines:(rejected by Protestants) 3. She remained a virgin after the birth of Jesus 4. She was conceived without the stain of original sin and was totally full of love for God; this is called the Immaculate Conception. Catholicism teaches this because it believes that it would not have been appropriate for God-incarnate to be carried in the womb of a sinful person. For Catholicism, Mary exemplifies that it is possible to be completely faithful to God. 5. After her death, Mary experienced the resurrection that all people will one day undergo and her body was taken into heaven; this is called the Assumption. Catholicism teaches this as a natural extension of number 4. Mary did not sin, therefore her body did not suffer corruption.

A:Teachings shared by all Christian denominations are that Mary was a virgin until the birth of Jesus, was married to Joseph and that Jesus, while on the cross, told the beloved disciple to look after her.

The Catholic Church holds Mary in special veneration and as a result has developed many unique teachings. The Church teaches that Mary remained a virgin all her life, that she was herself born without original sin (Immaculate Conception) and that either before she died or soon afterwards, she was taken

body and soul to heaven (Assumption of Mary).

Another Thought:

There are many traditions followed regarding Mary, but not much written about her in The Bible. Scripture says:

1. She was the wife of Joseph and the mother of Jesus (Matthew 1:16-24/Matthew 13:55/Luke 1:27) in fulfillment of prophecy (Isaiah 7:14).

2. She was chosen by God to give birth to the Messiah, being notified by the angel, Gabriel.(Luke 1:26-38)

3. Mary visited her relative, Elizabeth, when they were both expecting their babies, John the Baptizer and Jesus.(Luke 1:39-56) Elizabeth's baby, John, leapt for joy when Mary entered the room(vs41).

4. Mary and Joseph followed angelic direction by going to Egypt to protect their son, and then to leave Egypt and go to Nazareth, in fulfillment of prophecy(Matthew 2:13-23)

5. Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem (Luke 2:4-7) and was visited by shepherds who were notified by God's angels about the birth of Messiah (Luke 2:15-20)

6. She was told that her son would die (Luke 2:33-35)

7. Mary and Joseph had other children after Jesus (Matthew 13:53-58/Mark 6:3)

8. Mary was among the disciples praying after Jesus' death(Acts 1:14)
