Particle physicists used devices known as atom smashers. These may be linear accelerators, or in the shape of a ring which is known as a cyclotron. One of the most famous atom smashers is the Large Hadron Collider, which recently discovered the famous and long sought Higgs Boson.

Microbiologists use a wide variety of instruments, including microscopes, flasks, beakers, pipettes, centrifuges for separating tissues and materials, petri dishes for growing cultures, scales, test tubes, and so on. Many of the things microbiologists use are also used by chemists.

Geologists use picks, microscopes, spectrometers, seismographs (for measuring earthquakes), and lasers for measuring tectonic plate activity.

Astronomers use telescopes, particularly radiotelescopes.

Paleontologists use picks, shovels, buckets, brushes, and mesh screens. The screens winnow tiny specimens from dirt and dust.

Meteorologists use thermometers, barometers, rain gauges, and Doppler radar.
